Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University (MBSPSU), Patiala
The Punjab Government legally founded the Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University (MBSPSU), which is situated in Patiala, Punjab, by Punjab Act No. 11 of 2019 and was notified on August 29, 2019. Academic operations started on September 16, 2019. Effective September 9, 2019, the UGC has acknowledged it in accordance with Section 2(f) of the UGC Act. Punjab's only university with the authority to affiliate and oversee physical education or sports organizations is MBSPSU.
The institution, named for Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, a renowned sports patron of Patiala, seeks to promote integrated education in science, coaching, management, and sports under norms that are in line with those of other countries.

Campus & Affiliations
Originally operating as a constituent institution within Professor Gursewak Singh Government institution of Physical Education (Patiala), with administrative functions located at Mohindra Kothi, Patiala Mall Road
At Sidhuwal village, adjacent to Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala, a permanent campus spanning 92–97 acres is being built. Phase 1 (academic block and dormitories) was supposed to be completed by March 2023.
With the authority granted by the state act to affiliate and regulate sports education, MBSPSU comprises three constituent colleges and five affiliated institutions located throughout Punjab.
Goals and the Mandate
MBSPSU was founded to advance education in science, technology, management, and sports coaching. It is permitted to:
- operate as a State Training Center that implements best practices from around the world.
- serve as Punjab's only sports university and have affiliated authority over physical education and sports facilities.
- Improved instruction and study in both contemporary and conventional sports fields

- Admission is managed through central counselling, covering the university and its affiliated colleges in Patiala, Jalandhar, and Gurdaspur
- BPES: Physical Fitness Test is mandatory; national/state/international awardees may receive exemption or merit weightage.
- MPES: Selection based on multiple criteria including PFT, entrance test, academics, co‑curricular sports performance, and additional qualifications (up to 40% sports weightage)
