National Law University, Meghalaya (NLU Meg)

NLU Meg was founded on September 27, 2022, under the National Law University Meghalaya Act, 2022 (Act No. 10 of 2022). On December 13, 2023, the UGC acknowledged NLU Meg under Section 2(f). Being Meghalaya's first law school, it prepares students to participate in socio-legal discourse, particularly in the Northeast.

On April 1, 2024, NLU Meg joined the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and in June–September of the same year, the Bar Council of India (BCI) approved a number of integrated legal programs.

Academic Programme

Undergraduate Degrees (5‑Year Integrated Honours)

NLU Meg currently offers three full-time integrated degrees, each with an annual intake of 60 students (total 180), approved for academic years 2024–25 and 2025–26:

  • B.A. (Policy Science) + LL.B. (Hons.)
  • B.B.A. (FinTech) + LL.B. (Hons.)
  • B.Sc. (Data Science) + LL.B. (Hons.) 

These programs require completion of 280–340 credits, depending on whether students choose minor, major, or double-major options across Law and domain subjects

Postgraduate Degrees (2‑Year)

NLU Meg offers:

  • LL.M. (Major in Corporate Law)
  • LL.M. (Major in Criminal Laws)
  • M.S. in Public Policy Analytics

Available in two modes:

  • Residential full-time LL.M. or M.S.
  • Hybrid Micro-Degree Credit Programmed (MDCPP) with short campus residency; credits equivalent to full LL.M. required for conversion

Research and Fellowships

  • Ph.D., Research Fellow, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Working Fellow tracks are offered to students, researchers, and working professionals through fully residential on-campus programs

Campus and Facilities

  • The Mayurbhanj Complex in Nongthymmai, Shillong, is the location of the temporary campus. The chief minister of Meghalaya officially opened it in July 2023 with a budget of ₹25 crore, of which ₹19 crore had already been spent.
  • Smart classrooms, a physical and digital library, a moot court hall, dorms, labs, an auditorium, an indoor gaming area, and campus-wide Wi-Fi are among the facilities.
